landscape of mothers writing salon
Writing Salon offerings are an opportunity to connect with a particular Landscape Mother archetype while in a small group setting with the author! You can bring your tea, candles, maybe some flowers from the garden, and we will gather for 90 minutes to open ourselves to the pages in front of us. We will allow ourselves to explore in words (or doodles or art or silence) our understanding and relationship with one of the Landscape of Mothers archetypes.
I find that writing causes me to slow down, to more deeply consider what I think and feel. I can capture thoughts that I might have missed if I were simply sitting and thinking about it. Writing also allows me to move my body with the words as they arise, to breathe with them. Thereby my writing brings about my somatic understanding.
Choosing a Mother (or having her choose me) and then writing from a place of curiosity has been my primary method of learning from Landscape of Mothers archetypes. I'd love to share this practice with you. The archetypes are so rich, so full of possibility, there are so many interpretations and characteristics of each that might capture your attention and inquiry.

And, the thing I love most about Landscape of Mothers is that it takes on an extra layer of richness when we talk about the archetypes in a group. Each archetype becomes more dimensional, more relatable, like a true friend that we only have to draw up in our mind's eye to know what she would tell us about the-big-deal-thing-goin'-on-in-our-lives-right-now.
The best of Landscape of Mothers (I think) happens in a group setting. It's an opportunity not only for you to get to know the Mother through your own exploration, but to hear what others see in the archetype. Even if it doesn't resonate for you, or isn't the most compelling characteristic for you, it creates greater depth in the archetype as you continue your relationship with her. The archetype becomes more 3-dimensional, she holds greater meaning, and sometimes someone articulates something you've been feeling but haven't put words to yet. |
what will the gathering be like?
- We'll gather on Zoom at the Salon date and time
- We'll open with an invocation of the Mothers and a chance to greet each other.
- I'll provide a short summary of the primary strengths and struggles of the focal Mother.
- We'll do a short warm up writing exercise before we begin the longer writing session.
- I will provide several prompts relative to the focal Mother for you to write on, or you can choose your own.
- The long writing session will be approximately 30 minutes, during which time you'll have access to me if you get stuck or want further prompts.
- We'll re-gather ourselves and you can share your writing if it feels right to you.
- There should also be time for Q&A at the end.
You will receive a reminder email 24 hours in advance of the gathering time with a Zoom link.
I will provide a downloadable PDF with all writing prompts so you can work on some and leave others for later exploration.

Q: Do I have to be a mom? What if my kids are grown? What if I don't have kids?
A: While Landscape of Mothers was intended to support moms who are actively parenting, it is easily accessible to anyone who is struggling with or contemplating motherhood as a concept. That can look like wondering if you want to be a parent, actively parenting, parenting grown children, being an auntie, healing a relationship with your own mother, or trying to figure out what mothering means to you without having your own children... this Writing Salon is for you.

Q: Do I have to have the book to participate?
A: No, you do not. It might be helpful, as you have access to more information than I will be able to present during the gathering. I will provide a brief summary at the beginning of each salon for the Mother we are exploring, though I will be assuming some familiarity with the archetypes.

Q: Do I have to write about the Mother you are presenting? Could I write about one of the other Mothers?
A: You do not have to write about the Mother I have chosen as the theme for the day. You can write about any Mother in which you are interested. In that case it would be ideal for you to already have the book, as I will only be presenting the theme Mother for the day.

Q: Do I have to share what I write?
